For most adults, the challenge in improv isn’t learning something new.  It’s unlearning all our defences:  The ways we think we “ought” to be; the ways we hold ourselves back, our over-cautiousness and over-thinking. 

Our self censoring tries to keep us safe but if we hold back and close off too much, we also miss the connection and joy we really want.  Like Brene Brown says, trying to be perfect “is a twenty-ton shield that we lug around thinking it will protect us when, in fact, it’s the thing that’s really preventing us from flight.”

That’s why improv can be such a joyful, life enhancing practice.  It’s a safe, positive place to practice opening up and letting go just a little bit more than normal. 

You don’t have to have the genetics of an Olympic athlete to benefit from going for a weekly run.  In the same way, you don’t have to be an aspiring star to benefit from improv.
